Vancouver restores Salmon Run Bell Tower in Esther Short Park
Vancouver city officials said they celebrated the restoration of the iconic Salmon Run Bell Tower in Esther Short Park on June 5.
The event included a blessing by Sam Robinson, Vice Chairman of the Chinook Indian Nation.
Officials said the project returned the tower and its features to working order. The work included structural steel repairs, repairs to the brick tower, and the restoration of Jim Demetro’s Spiraling Salmon bronze art piece that surrounds the tower.
City officials said the restored rotating sculptural diorama tells the Chinook legend of the salmon through movement, storytelling, and audio narration. They said visitors can hear music from the 35-bell glockenspiel and discover artwork that celebrates the region’s connection to the Columbia River.
Officials said the Vancouver landmark returns for the community to enjoy for years to come after years of inactivity.
For more information about the project, the city directed the public to: cityofvancouver.us/belltower.
The city also said an audio-described version of the related video is available at https://youtu.be/xsqiGByj4lE.
