Davis Gates Highlights Intersectional Power at Labor Convention
At the Washington State Labor Council Convention in Vancouver, WA, Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates delivered a keynote speech. During her address, Davis Gates recounted historical events, stating that Black people, women, and multiracial solidarity played key roles in undermining the Confederacy by stopping the means of production in the South. Her remarks included reference to the concept of a general strike, drawn from historical context.
Her speech was one of several during the three-day convention, which centered on the theme “Our Voice, Our Power, Our Movement.” A video clip of her keynote, beginning at the 32-minute mark, is available online at the link provided by the Chicago Teachers Union.
