Vancouver Celebrates Native American Heritage Day
Staff Report / Vancouverlocal.org
Today marks Native American Heritage Day in Vancouver, Washington, where the community honors its cultural roots and histories. This year, the city celebrates the installation of the Grandmother Camus sculpture, located at St. Johns Blvd. and Q Street. Created by artist Toma Villa, the sculpture tells the story of a grandmother who sacrifices herself, transforming into camas bulbs to protect her grandchildren. This representation symbolizes resilience, love, and a connection to the land.
The area surrounding Grandmother Camus has been designated as a Naturespaces site, which aims to preserve native plant habitats. This initiative highlights the lasting relationship between indigenous communities and their environment.
