Indigenous Art as a Path to Reconciliation

Staff Report / nyclocal.org

Eugenia Kisin, an associate professor at NYU Gallatin, has released a new book titled "Aesthetics of Repair: Indigenous Art and the Form of Reconciliation." In her work, Kisin explores the role of Indigenous art in British Columbia, particularly in relation to social issues such as treaty processes and Indigenous rights. She reflects on her experiences moving to Vancouver at the age of 18, where she observed a significant Indigenous presence and a vibrant display of Northwest Coast art.

Kisin notes that while the beauty of this art is evident, it exists alongside ongoing tensions and concerns regarding treaty obligations and government actions related to Indigenous lands and resources. Her book discusses how Indigenous communities use art to navigate complex feelings about oppression and to reclaim cultural narratives, while also receiving support from government entities.
